Opportunity Details

Title: Board member
Organisation: The Foundation for Developing Cambodian Communities
Description:
Expected Duties and Responsibilities

The role involves participation on a working board for a recently established Australian NGO that operates community projects in rural Cambodia. The role of the Director would be to provide strategic and operational input, including attendance of up to 8 Board meetings per year.

Each Director generally has a functional area of responsibility with regard to the FDCC operations, within which they are expected to develop policies & procedures and provide advice and assistance to the Cambodian staff of FDCC. Given the Cambodian FDCC team has had little formal experience in the NGO sector before working for FDCC, Directors provide significant operational input and guidance. As the staff’s capabilities eventually develop in Cambodia, the role of the Directors will evolve to a more strategic advisory position.

There is an expectation of a time commitment of 1-2 hours per week outside of board meetings to review and guide the organisation’s development and operation. All Directors are also expected to take on joint responsibility for fundraising.

Existing Directors travel to Cambodia periodically at their own expense to work with the staff. While there is no formal requirement on new Directors to travel to Cambodia, it is likely that those interested in the position will be willing to visit FDCC, both to assist in operational development and to engage with the FDCC staff and Prey Veng community at a personal level.

Qualifications, Skills and Capabilities

No formal qualifications are required for the role. However, experience in the NGO sector, particularly in fundraising would be advantageous. Alternatively, business acumen, a strategic focus and access to corporate networks would be viewed favourably. It is also desirable that Directors have good research skills to undertake the development of policies and procedures. The Director should also have an interest in working with committed colleagues to create a successful organisation that provides sustainable opportunities for rural Cambodians.

About the Foundation for Developing Cambodian Communities

The Foundation for Developing Cambodian Communities (FDCC) was established by a group of Australians more than 4 years ago. All Australians involved with FDCC are volunteers and 100% of all money raised is used to directly fund two projects in Cambodia:

• The Mekhala House project for orphaned and underprivileged girls in a rural province of Cambodia. Here, they receive a high level of support and access to a range of educational activities to the children such as English and computer/internet access so the children can improve their lives and have good future job prospects. Our focus is to provide opportunity to and empower girls so they can become leaders in their communities.

• The Mekhala Learning Resource Centre (opened in August 2009) offers English & computer classes, a library with English & Khmer resources and internet access. These services is offered to underprivileged children in the community. FDCC alsos seek to provide adult education targeting teachers to ensure information is shared at all levels of the community.

• Other potential projects for the future include a handicraft business to create employment in the region and a consulting arm to provide business advice to local communities.
