Information for Volunteers

Volunteer Congratulation on your interest in joining Australia’s growing professional volunteer community!

Many of you will have had a desire to give something back to the community but may have been unsure how to do it. Over recent years there has been a ground swell amongst professionals wanting to give back using the skills gained over years of working in their fields.
And this is where the VolunteerMatch service can help. Our focus is on providing the resources for skilled professionals, such as lawyers, accountants, IT and marketing professionals, to connect with Not for Profit organisations.

Once you become involved there are many benefits to volunteering your professional skills.
These may include:
- making a difference
- meeting new people
- gaining knowledge and new skills
- expanding a network of associates
- experiencing new challenges
- gaining confidence as your skills get used in a different environment
- good health (research has shown that those involved in altruism of some sort have better health)

Keen to see what opportunities are available on VolunteerMatch currently? Just use the search function and you can search by location, organisation and position type and you’re on your way to finding your volunteer opportunity.

If something catches your eye, all you need to do to is register and apply.

    Tips for Volunteering

We do recommend that when you search for any potential volunteer opportunity, you view it as you would any paid position. Finding a volunteer position that is your ‘perfect match’ requires just as much time, thought and commitment. The Not for Profit organisation you are working with will be relying on you to complete any opportunity you agree to take on.

Once you find the right opportunity, respect the relationship you form with the Not for Profit - your professional volunteering experience will only be positive if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort.

  • Before you register with VolunteerMatch and start the ‘match-making’ process you may want to ask yourself a few questions:
    - what do I want to get out of my volunteer experience?
    - what amount of time am I able to contribute?
    - what cause or charity am I passionate about?
    - what specific professional skills can I contribute?

  • Use the answers to these questions to guide how you search for opportunities and which opportunities you apply for.

  • Remember that the opportunities in VolunteerMatch are skilled positions. This may mean that as the skilled professional, you may have a greater understanding of the time, skills and resources required to complete a project. Be sure to remember this when dealing with an organisation, and committing to help them.

  • Before you start your volunteer journey we suggest you check out Volunteering Victoria’s list of Rights and Responsibilities.

  • Your VolunteerMatch profile

    Volunteer
  • Registration

  • As a volunteer, we encourage you to register your details on the VolunteerMatch site so you can create a personal profile.
    By registering you ensure that:
    - you receive bulletins about new opportunities in your skill area
    - you can view full details about volunteer opportunities
    - you’re able to apply for those opportunities that interest you

Although you can search for opportunities on the VolunteerMatch site without registering, in order to apply for the positions and to make sure you’re the best match for the opportunity you will need to register. Of course, registration is free!
Registration is a simple process that requires you to include the following information:
    - basic contact information
    - a chosen username and password (you will be required to enter this each time you use the site)
    - your area of professional expertise

You will also be asked to provide additional information such as your professional experience, any professional memberships you have, and what type of professional volunteering position you are seeking.

It’s good idea to take the time to fill out this information – when you apply for an opportunity this is how the organisation will be able to decide if your skills are what they are looking for.
    Register Now

  • Privacy

  • When you register with VolunteerMatch our staff will be able to see the information you enter (excluding your password information). You are the only person who can edit your profile information.

Not for Profit organisations cannot see your profile until you apply for an opportunity. When you apply for an opportunity, the organisation who posted the opportunity will be able to see:
    - Your name
    - Your State and Postcode
    - Your age range
    - Your selected skill areas
They will also be able to see any other information you have included to describe your skills and experience.
Only once your application has been accepted will the organisation be able to see your email address. This allows them to then contact you to discuss the opportunity.
Other volunteers, and members of the general public, cannot see your profile.

  • Volunteer eBulletin

  • In addition to manually searching for volunteer opportunities on the site, you can opt in and receive our fortnightly e-bulletin of current VolunteerMatch opportunities.
You can opt out of this bulletin at any time, but many professionals find it a good way to keep them informed of what’s new on the site without having to search manually.
To receive the bulletin, or to opt out, simply select or de-select the option at the bottom of your profile page.

    Searching and Applying

  • Searching for the right opportunity

  • You can search for professional volunteer opportunities on the VolunteerMatch website at any time without registering.

If you are signed up to our Volunteer eBulletin you will also receive a fortnightly update of the current volunteer opportunities available – organised by state.

  • Applying

  • To start applying for professional volunteer opportunities you must be registered with the site as a volunteer. Once you are registered and start applying for opportunities the process is much the same as if you were applying for a paid position.

STEP 1: To apply for an opportunity, you must be logged in as a volunteer.

Simply click ‘apply’ at the bottom of the opportunity advertised. The Not for Profit organisation has seven working days to either ‘accept’ or ‘reject’ your application. If you have not heard from them within seven working days it is not advised that you contact them yourselves, but instead keep applying for other opportunities available.

STEP 2: If your application is ‘accepted’ the Not for Profit will contact you by email to set up an interview and find out more about you.
When you talk to the organisation, make sure you discuss the opportunity in detail - this is your opportunity to see exactly what the organisation needs in terms of time commitment and skills. Remember that as the qualified professional, you may be able to provide a greater understanding of the time, resources and support required to complete a project.

STEP 3: After this point it is up to the Not for Profit to contact you and let you know whether you have been successful in gaining the position.
If you are not successful, don’t give up! There are always hundreds of opportunities available at any one time and your ‘perfect match’ is sure to be out there.

STEP 4: Enjoy your volunteering experience! We know you will find it extremely rewarding.
